What This Is

I have collected here a small selection of the many thousand pictures I have taken. In the future I will post more galleries as I travel and explore. As I take pictures, I sometimes look for the perfect composition, but mostly I just think it is fun to have some photographic history of the insanity that we see.

The Technical Side

I would like to give credit to the engine that is driving this gallery section.  Though much of this site is built by myself, I, like any good programmer, am lazy.  I take examples from the open source community whenever possible.  There is no point in re-inventing the wheel here if I don't have too.  The list of links to the right are dynamically generated through the beauty of php.  The folders that they point to have been built and rendered by the wonderful Google product Picasa. It was very quick and easy to setup their free software and catalog all of the content on my computer.  With only about 20 minutes of reading and talent-less hacking I rebuilt one of the templates to fit the form and function of my website.

The simplicity of these tools really is a glorious thing.  To create and upload a new gallery it just takes me two steps now.

  1. Select the pictures I want and export them using my template in Picasa.
  2. Drag the generated folder from my hard drive onto the web server directory and the rest gets taken care of dynamically.

The implementation cost up front (entirely of my own time) is well worth the ease and simplicity of what can be done with the tools at hand.  At this point I don't think I could ever go back to a website that does not have dynamic content and linking structures.  It's just too much damn work to update each page individually when it could all be done in one place.
